Mason Holgate’s redemption shows how he fully deserves his new Everton contract

Mason Holgate has been handed a new contract at Everton. The defender has signed a new deal until 2025 after impressing at Goodison Park this season.

The Mirror recently reported that Manchester City have been keeping tabs on Holgate. The report claimed a £30 million bid could be in the offing and that ex-Everton defender John Stones could be sent back to the Toffees as part of any deal.

So this new deal is timely, considering Holgate’s brilliant form at Everton this season.

It is also remarkable, considering how close Everton seemingly came to selling Holgate in the summer.

In August, The Sun reported that Holgate was a target for the Premier League trio of Bournemouth, Burnley and Sheffield United. The asking price was around £10 million for a player that appeared to have come up short in his bid to impress ex-boss, Marco Silva.

Everton were linked with a host of central defenders in the summer, such as ex-loanee Kurt Zouma, David Luiz, Fikayo Tomori, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling. Everton needed to reinforce the position after losing Zouma and veteran Phil Jagielka. But they failed to sign any of these targets and, as a result, Holgate remained.

And thankfully so. Holgate’s turnaround has been sensational and it is a real credit to the Yorkshireman that he is now enjoying a new lucrative deal at Goodison Park. There is even talk of a potential England cap around the corner.

Hopefully, Holgate can continue his progression into an Everton first-team regular after his brilliant redemption this season.
