Mason Holgate should be taking inspiration from Liverpool’s Joe Gomez

Everton defender Mason Holgate is one of the club’s brightest prospects.

The 2015 signing from Barnsley has a good reputation amongst the Toffees faithful, and is considered by many as a potential long-term mainstay.

In recent weeks though, Holgate has lost his way a little.

Having featured in the Toffees first five Premier League games, he is now without an appearance in the last four, with manager Marco Silva having preferred the likes of Michael Keane and Kurt Zouma at centre-back, and Seamus Coleman and Jonjoe Kenny at right-back.

Holgate will surely be disappointed, after faring well enough in those opening five games.

He’s a very talented and versatile young defender, much like Joe Gomez is across the city for bitter rivals Liverpool.

Holgate can take inspiration from Gomez rise

It’ll be a frustrating time for Holgate as he watches his fellow defenders in action.

But he can definitely take heart from the rise of Gomez as the pair do share similarities.

For starters, both joined Merseyside clubs from League One sides in the summer of 2015, with Gomez signing for Liverpool from Charlton Athletic.

Both can play centrally or as a right-back, and the pair have made a very similar number of apperances since their respective signings.

Gomez appears to be the more advanced, and has enjoyed an impressive rise in the space of the past year.

The Catford-born defender made his England debut in November 2017, and was perhaps unlucky to miss out on the World Cup through injury.

He has raised his game even further this term alongside Virgil van Dijk and is now considered one of the Premier League’s best young defenders.

Holgate will be experiencing some frustration, but so did Gomez when he sustained his cruciate ligament injury shortly after signing – and now he’s flourishing, just as Holgate has the potential to if he keeps his head down and takes his chances when they come.
