Mason Holgate has lifted the lid on when Duncan Ferguson told him he’d be playing in central midfield against Manchester United yesterday.
On Everton’s Twitter feed, Holgate said he only found out in the team meeting a couple of hours before kick off that he’d be partnering Tom Davies in the engine room.
When asked when he found out he’d be playing in midfield, Holgate said: “Just after we had our pre-match meeting, about 11:30. So there wasn’t that much time, but we’d found out Gylfi wasn’t well and I had a word with Duncan and said I’m happy to do a job in there.
“So I got my head around it quite quickly. He said to me after it was already happening anyway. But I said I’m more than happy to play anywhere to help the team.”

TBR’s View – Holgate sums up the passion Ferguson has brought back
Holgate was ready to fill in in an unfamiliar position even before his manager asked him and put in a sensational performance of resilience and quality.
That’s what Ferguson has brought back to the club and that passion has been coursing through their performances since Marco Silva was sacked.
