Mason Holgate helped Everton claim a first win at Anfield since 1999 with some solid defensive work – and afterwards, received a message of support from legendary defender Rio Ferdinand.

The Toffees enforcer played as part of a three-man defence alongside Ben Godfrey and Michael Keane, with the trio proving the catalyst to a massive three points.

Everton have not enjoyed a good run against Liverpool, particularly at Goodison Park, but were never really in danger against their fierce rivals last night.

Holgate has spent some of the current campaign sidelined through injury but last night he put in a fine performance to thwart Liverpool’s fearsome front three.

After the game, he received some praise on Instagram from ex-Manchester United defender Ferdinand who noticed something about the defender.

Holgate’s injury problems have limited him to just 14 Premier League outings this season.

He is, however, a valued member of Carlo Ancelotti’s defensive unit and this was a stunning performance by the ex-Barnsley defender.

The 24-year-old can operate as a central defender or as a right-back and has now made 96 appearances for Everton in total.

He spent some time out on loan with West Brom previously but is now an important part of the Everton ranks.

Ferdinand was clearly delighted with Holgate. As a former Manchester United performer, any game in which Liverpool don’t win is likely to be positive from his perspective.

Holgate earns £37,500-a-week at Goodison Park and is clearly a player fancied by Ancelotti at the moment.

This performance will have gone a long towards proving his quality to his boss and he’ll hope to continue in the team for the foreseeable.

For Ferdinand, he’ll continue to rejoice in Liverpool’s flailing campaign.
