Mason Holgate has told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel that recalling moments such as Jurgen Klopp running onto the pitch in a previous Merseyside derby motivated Everton heading into the weekend’s trip to Anfield.
The Toffees ended a long wait for a victory at the ground on Saturday. Goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson saw them win at the home of their rivals for the first time since 1999.
In the time between victories, Everton have had to endure a lot of pain and disappointment. And one of the most notable incidents came in December 2018.
An error from Jordan Pickford allowed Divock Origi to score a stoppage-time winner. And that prompted Klopp to sprint onto the pitch to embrace Alisson.
And when asked about whether moments like that had an impact on the Toffees, Holgate’s comments hinted that Carlo Ancelotti may have not needed to do much of a team talk.
“Yeah it definitely plays on your mind,” he told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel. “Things like that, I don’t even know how to say about it.
“To be able to put it nicely, I’m not really sure how to do it. It just gets to you so bad. And then you’re seeing it for weeks on videos. So to get one over like that was good.”
The celebrations Everton enjoyed after the game at the weekend may well have a similar impact on Liverpool ahead of their next meeting.
Ancelotti’s men made no attempt to hide what the victory meant to them. And Klopp’s men will not want to watch those scenes again anytime soon.
But for neutrals, it can be fantastic to see those moments which highlight just what it means to the players and staff to secure the derby bragging rights.
