Everton fans had multiple reasons to watch the Germany v Mexico game yesterday. The Toffees have been heavily linked with a player on each side and fans were looking to see how those players got on.
One such player was Hirving Lozano. His performance would have excited the Everton faithful. He scored the winning goal as Mexico shocked the World Cup holders.
But they were also watching the display of left-back Marvin Plattenhardt of Germany. The Hertha Berlin star is currently being linked with a move to Everton as a long-term replacement for the veteran Leighton Baines.
The Daily Star reported this morning that a £16 million deal looks to be in the works for after the World Cup.
On paper, it looks a good deal but based on his performance against Mexico not many Everton fans are chomping at the bit to see him at Goodison Park.
Plattenhardt struggled throughout the game and, at times, completely neglected his defensive duties. Leaving the centre-backs exposed, Germany fans were frustrated with the display from their defender.
Everton need to bring in a new left-back this summer, of that there appears no argument. However, £16 million seems a steep price for the defender who struggled for his country this weekend.
