Martyn Waghorn has told TalkSPORT that he is “over the moon” to see Rangers back on top in Scottish football, outperforming Celtic and impressing in Europe – while also commenting on the resignation of Neil Lennon as Hoops manager.
Rangers sit 18 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and with just eight games to play, Rangers will mathematically end Celtic’s hopes of 10 in a row with just seven more points. Lennon has resigned as Celtic manager.
The Hoops have endured a dismal campaign on and off the pitch, ending their chances of achieving 10. The Hoops are miles off it, and Lennon has finally decided to depart after months of pundits and supporters suggesting he leaves Parkhead.
Plenty are already being linked – including Eddie Howe and Frank Lampard – and ex-Rangers striker Waghorn believes it was inevitable that Lennon would depart. The Derby ace also spoke of his delight to see Rangers starring under Steven Gerrard.

“Gerrard is one who isn’t happy if they win but don’t play well, but in that division you’ve just got to focus on winning and getting the title,” Waghorn said. “Rangers have done so well to be in this position and to be challenging in Europe again.
“I still speak to a few of them – more than deserved. I’m over the moon for them. Regarding Celtic, it’s never nice for anyone – it’s good news for us that they’ve had a difficult year. In football these days it [Lennon’s exit] was always going to happen.”
TBR’s view – Can Celtic bounce back next season?
Well, they need to start afresh. They need a manager who can change things top and bottom. The current recruitment team need to be ripped to shreds, and a new manager needs to bring his own staff – and recruitment department.
The control needs to go back to the manager. Lennon struggled given he was not allowed his own staff, and clearly signings were made above his say so. They need a high-profile manager who is not just a puppet. Frank Lampard, perhaps?
