Martinelli makes big claim about Arsenal transfer target Djed Spence

Gabriel Martinelli has told The Athletic that he would say that Djed Spence is the toughest individual opponent he has faced – in comments that will certainly catch the eye of those working behind the scenes at Arsenal.

Spence is on the Gunners’ radar this summer. It comes as he continues to shine while on loan at Nottingham Forest. It seems remarkable that Middlesbrough allowed the 21-year-old to stay at the City Ground.

Of course, that move meant that Spence came up against Arsenal in the recent FA Cup tie between the two. And he went on to produce a stunning performance. Ian Wright suggested that he was ‘unbelievable‘ in the game.

It would appear that Spence’s performance made an impression on the Arsenal hierarchy. Reports have claimed that Mikel Arteta’s men are planning to make a move at the end of the season as they look for further cover for Takehiro Tomiyasu.

What will certainly help Spence’s cause is the backing of one of Arsenal’s most exciting players. Martinelli was asked to name his toughest opponent. And he picked out the Forest loanee.

“Actually the guy from Nottingham Forest, Djed Spence, who I played against in the FA Cup,” he told The Athletic. “He is very strong, good on the ball, calm and quick. I was surprised; he is a really good player.”

Cedric Soares has actually impressed in recent games. And for some at Arsenal, that may make the Portuguese a worthwhile understudy for Tomiyasu moving forward.

However, Spence looks to be a seriously exciting talent. He certainly has the potential to be a huge upgrade on Cedric in the years to come.

Reports claimed that Boro want around £15 million for the starlet. With that in mind, it looks to be a no-brainer for Arsenal to bring Spence to the Emirates at the end of the season.

Martinelli will have come up against some amazing full-backs in the Premier League. So it says a lot that Spence is the player to have caught his eye.
