Martin Keown was shocked to see Arsenal star Kieran Tierney marking Luuk de Jong

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has claimed that he was shocked to see Kieran Tierney marking PSV striker Luuk de Jong just before the Dutchman scored yesterday.

The Gunners suffered their first defeat in the Europa League this season at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven. They were awful from start to finish, and Keown feels Tierney was at fault for the hosts’ second goal.

Arsenal did not deserve to take anything from the game yesterday – even Mikel Arteta admitted that in his post-match press conference.

There was no fight, courage or determination from the Gunners, which is really surprising as they have been so good in all competitions since the start of the campaign.

PSV were completely the better side yesterday, but Arsenal didn’t help themselves. They made numerous mistakes, including the decision to ask 5ft 10in Tierney to mark De Jong, who is well over six feet tall.

Unsurprisingly, the Dutchman won that battle, and with a little help from Aaron Ramsdale in goal, he doubled PSV’s lead to give them a memorable win.

Speaking about the corner, Keown said on BT Sport after the game, as quoted by The Metro: “For the second goal, Tierney picks up De Jong from the corner and straight away I’m screaming at the TV because he shouldn’t be the one marking him.

“Ramsdale comes, thinking he can cure the problem, but it’s a big haymaker from him. It’s one of those that needed a straight arm but it was wild from Ramsdale.

“Tierney doesn’t even get off the ground, I don’t know why he was marking him. If I’m Holding I would make myself available to help him but he didn’t do that either.”

Tierney vs De Jong is a complete mismatch and that cost Arsenal a goal. However, even if the 25-year-old Scotsman had won that battle, the Gunners wouldn’t have won the game.

The offside flag saved Arsenal on three separate occasions yesterday, while Ramsdale pulled off a very good save from De Jong in the second half to make the scoreline look a lot less embarrassing.

It’s a good thing that the Gunners have already qualified for the next stage of the Europa League. They just need a point now to secure the top spot, and against FC Zurich at home, they will fancy themselves to get that.

Arsenal take on Nottingham Forest next and it will be interesting to see if Tierney will get the nod again at left-back after his performance yesterday.
