Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown feels his old club should play Sokratis and Calum Chambers as their central defensive duo after last night’s 2-1 loss to Brighton.
Speaking to TalkSport, Keown endorsed dropping David Luiz out of the side to allow £16 million (BBC) man Chambers to partner £17.7 million (Guardian) Sokratis as the Gunners seek to end a nine-game winless run.
He said: “Now you’ve got players available, you’ve got to coach them, train them, nurture them. If they’ve not got it in their nature, nurture them to do what you want them to do. I would pull David Luiz to one side and say ‘I’m just going to sit you out’.
“He seems to be the biggest culprit for wanting to shrink away and drop off. They’ve lost the basics. I might just play Chambers and Sokratis and say ‘I want you guys to play further up the pitch’.”
TBR’s View – Chambers definitely deserves a chance at centre half
Chambers performed well in midfield at Fulham last season and has been played at right back at times this term, performing well on the whole.
But his best role is centre half – that’s where his attributes are best deployed – but he hasn’t really had the chance. Playing full back will give him experience of defending with space behind him and using speed to get back in.
Luiz was bought to bring experience but he plays like a young player. Chambers is more level-headed and while it’s unlikely to be a magic bullet, it’s worth a try.
