BBC pundit Martin Keown claims that Southampton have discovered another “gem” with their manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and wants the club to back him financially in the summer transfer window.
The Saints are still fighting against relegation from the Premier League, but are six points clear of safety with only three games remaining.
They found themselves inside the relegation places in December, which is when they decided to appoint Hasenhuttl as the successor to Mark Hughes at St Mary’s.
The Austrian arrived after impressing in the German Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, as he took his first position in England.
Hasenhuttl has managed to turn Southampton’s luck around with his influence and they now appear to be a team that play a lot more attacking football with better intensity.
Keown is certainly impressed by what he’s seen from the Saints manager and feels he should get to make his own stamp on the squad at the end of the season.
“Ralph Hasenhuttl has been a breath of fresh air. Southampton have a habit of this. They have had some good managers in the past,” Keown wrote in the Daily Mail.
“Now, in Hasenhuttl, it looked like they’ve unearthed another gem. They should back him in the summer and let him build the club up.”
Southampton can’t think about next season until they are mathematically safe, but that could be confirmed at the weekend and they host Bournemouth on Saturday in search of three points.
There have definitely been improvements made on the South Coast and they have once again managed to pull a quality manager.
They have been a feeder clubs to some of the elite teams in England in recent years, but it would be great if Southampton can get back to competing in the top half of the table like they were not too long ago.
Hasenhuttl is going to need several fresh bodies if he wants to take his team up the table and the club shouldn’t have much hesitation to doubt him.
