Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown reckons the Gunners should be looking at two Genk players following Wednesday night’s Champions League action.
Genk were beaten 4-1 by Liverpool, but the Belgian side’s centre-half pairing of Carlos Cuesta and Jhon Lucumi left a lasting impression on Keown, who was casting his eye over proceedings in the BT Sport studio.
The Colombians caught the eye despite the scoreline, and Keown has advised his old club to consider an approach.
He said (quoted by The Sun): “[Cuesta] looks some player by the way, both Colombian central defenders look pretty decent.
“If I was an Arsenal scout – and never have been, never been asked to comment ever as a former player on prospective purchases – these two are not bad, I can tell you.”
The South Americans were fairly powerless to prevent any of Liverpool’s goals on the night, and can hold their heads high despite the 4-1 loss.
TBR’s view – Would be a gamble
Both players have a lot of promise, but perhaps Keown’s comments are a little knee-jerk.
They may have both had good games but they would surely both be a big gamble
The step up in quality from the Jupiler Pro League to the Premier League is huge, and perhaps both need to develop a little more before they become truly ready.
Arsenal’s defence remains very fragile, and arguably at the moment they need an older player with top quality, with youngster William Saliba joining in 2020.
