Martin Keown slams Harry Kane for ‘dangerous’ play during Tottenham’s win over Brighton

  1. Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has slammed Tottenham forward Harry Kane for what he believed was ‘dangerous’ play in winning a penalty from Adam Lallana.

The Spurs striker went down in a heap following a clash with Lallana on the edge of the box. And after initally giving a free-kick, referee Graham Scott changed the decision to a penalty with the help of VAR.

However, it wasn’t a straightforward call once again and Keown, speaking on Match of the Day 2, insisted it was Kane who was putting another player at risk with his play.

“The referee has had a really bad afternoon, this is Harry Kane, I believe he knows exactly what he is doing,” Keown said. (Quotes from The Independent)

“He looks at his opponent, knows what he is going to do and makes a back for him. I think it is dangerous play from Harry Kane and he knows what he is doing and I don’t even think it is a penalty.”

Kane duly tucked the penalty away to give Spurs the lead but did little else in the game which saw Brighton dominate in the main.

However, despite an equaliser from Tariq Lamptey, a late header from Gareth Bale sealed all three points for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Keown has a point but we see this all the time – TBR View

Not sure if there’s an element of bitterness here from Keown but in the grand scheme of things, it’s just clever play from Kane.

He wins what is first thought to be a free-kick and gives the referee a decision to make. It’s not then his fault that VAR deemed it to be inside the area for the penalty.

The former Arsenal man makes a good point but we see this most weeks and it’s just part of the game a lot of the time.
