Martin Keown says Spurs have made a ‘good addition’ and a ‘smart buy’

Tottenham Hotspur have made a “good addition” in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and a “smart buy” in Matt Doherty, Martin Keown has told the Daily Mail.

Jose Mourinho’s side had been linked with Hojbjerg for months and, on 11 August, he sealed a reported £15million move to North London on a five-year contract.

The Dane had been with Southampton since 2016, when he joined from Bayern Munich for a reported £12.8million (BBC Sport), and made 134 appearances in all competitions for the Saints.

On 30 August, Tottenham then signed Doherty, the 28-year-old joining from Wolves in a reported £14.7million deal and penning a four-year deal with Spurs.

The Irish right-back made 50 appearances for Wolves last season as the Molineux club finished seventh in the Premier League and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Ahead of the start of the new Premier League season, the Daily Mail asked its pundits whether Mourinho could turn Tottenham into winners.

Keown replied: “We know Mourinho’s track record — he’s won a trophy at every club he’s managed and 25 in total across Europe. So we’d be silly to say he can’t do it at Tottenham, too.

“Several members of the side that reached the Champions League final in 2019 are still there, Harry Kane included.

“Eric Dier is being used at centre back, which I consider his best position. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a good addition who was part of a Southampton side that pressed very well, and Matt Doherty from Wolves was a smart buy.”

Going into the transfer window, Spurs were in need of a dynamic, tenacious midfielder and a right-back, and Hojbjerg and Doherty fit the bill, two solid players in the prime of their careers with plenty of Premier League experience.

With experienced goalkeeper Joe Hart also joining the Spurs ranks, the squad is definitely starting to look strong, but there’s still work to be done – a striker is a priority, while a new centre-back is also needed following Jan Vertonghen’s exit.
