Martin Keown says Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin is ‘incredible’ in the air

Martin Keown has singled out Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his aerial ability and feels that he’s almost unrivalled in that aspect.

After scoring nine goals in his opening six appearances of the season for the Toffees, the 23-year-old was drafted into the England squad during the international break and that’s not impacted his form.

Calvert-Lewin has been a pivotal figure for Everton in helping them to win their opening four league matches, as well helping them to progress to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old was handed a start by international boss Gareth Southgate on Thursday night and he marked his senior England debut with a goal in the 3-0 victory against Wales in a friendly.

He powered in a close-range header from Grealish to break the deadlock and it’s a feature of his game that has become so important.

The in-form striker is someone that is going to outjump any defender most of the time with his phenomenal leap and he’s turning his presence in the box into goals.

Keown believes there aren’t many better at winning headers than Calvert-Lewin, who must be on an all-time high right now and loving every single moment he steps onto a pitch.

“He’s full of confidence, he’s incredible in the air the leap he has. He’s staying much more central and he’s becoming more of a predator in the box and scoring goals for fun,” Keown told talkSPORT.

“Calvert-Lewin is really tearing things up and it’s great news for England. Great spring, there’s not many now better than him in the air.”

TBR’s View:

The hype around Calvert-Lewin right now is justified considering his form and manager Carlo Ancelotti deserves so much credit for installing confidence in him, but the real hard work is going to start again for him soon now that there are so many eyes on him.

There was a moment in Harry Kane’s Spurs career where everything just clicked for him and he was transformed into a top scorer.

Calvert-Lewin needs to try hope he follows in the same path and his England teammate is a perfect role model for him to try mirror, so he should be picking his brain as much as possible during the training camp with the Three Lions.
