Martin Keown says Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno could be seen as a weakness
Martin Keown believes that future opponents may highlight goalkeeper Bernd Leno as a weakness in the Arsenal team.
The Gunners managed to kickstart their group stages in the Europa League with a 2-1 away win against Rapid Vienna on Thursday night, but it was a game to forget for the goalkeeper.
Leno gifted the Austrian side their goal when he gave away possession in the box with a sloppy pass and he nearly repeated the mistake on a further two occasions.
The 28-year-old pulled off a couple of eye-catching saves, but he looked shaky on the ball throughout the contest and struggled playing out from the back.
With Emiliano Martinez’s sale to Aston Villa in the summer, the pressure has been cranked up on the German to vindicate the decision to keep him as the number one at the Emirates Stadium.
Keown claimed after the European fixture that upcoming opponents may be looking at him as Arsenal’s weak spot.
“It was just one of those night. You’d hope the rest of the Premier League haven’t been watching tonight because if they have have they’ll feel maybe Leno is a bit of a weakness,” Keown told BT Sport 2 (11:02pm, 23 October).
“You just hope it’s a one-off, that he learns from it. It was a night Leno will want to forget.”
Leno is an excellent goalkeeper that for the majority of his Arsenal career so far has been reliable, but the shot-stopper is under the spotlight so heavily right now.
Martinez was excellent when he came into the Gunners XI in the second half of last season and there was much debate about whether Leno would retain the first-choice spot when he returned from injury, but in the end the former was sold to Villa.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta looks unlikely to move away from his style of playing out from defence and it’s an area of Leno’s game that he needs to improve on.
