Martin Keown has told Stadium Astro that he would love to see Arsenal complete a reported move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey this summer – with the club requiring a central midfielder.

The Daily Mail delivered another update in Arsenal’s reported pursuit of 27-year-old Partey, which has already gone on for a number of months. It is believed that the Gunners could look to sell three players to raise funds.

Partey has a release clause of £45million, and it is believed that Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira and Alexandre Lacazette could be sold to raise the cash necessary to spend on Partey.

Arsenal legend Keown has backed a move for Partey, stating that the Gunners need a strong midfielder that is not just another Guendouzi. He is confident that the African powerhouse is “the type” of player Arsenal require.

“I want a player that can actually control the game in midfield, not one that is from the second division in France,” Keown said. “Thomas Partey is very strong, a tough player. He is the type of player Arsenal need.

“Lucas Torreira doesn’t get used enough, though he has been injured. Xhaka has done better, but I’m not sure he is the right answer.”

TBR’s view – What should Arsenal’s midfield look like next term?

Granit Xhaka’s return to form has got to see him remain at The Emirates. The Swiss ace has thrived after giving up the pressure of being captain, but little can be said about Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi.

Indeed, Torreira and Guendouzi have struggled with both injury and attitude respectively, and both should be offloaded in the coming weeks. Dani Ceballos needs to be signed, as does Partey.

Having Ceballos, Partey and Xhaka and another player would be ideal.
