Martin Keown cannot understand Jose Mourinho’s Instagram post after Tottenham defeat

Martin Keown has told BT Sport that he cannot understand Jose Mourinho’s decision to post on Instagram after Tottenham Hotspur suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Belgian side Royal Antwerp in the Europa League on Thursday.

Spurs went into the game in excellent form, having gone 10 matches in all competitions unbeaten – last suffering defeat on the opening day of the season against Everton. They had won their previous five Europa League fixtures this term.

Mourinho made nine changes – bringing in Gareth Bale, Carlos Vinicius, Sergio Reguilion, Gio Lo Celso and plenty more but the intensity and work rate was lacking. Four went off at half time, including Dele Alli – who was clearly frustrated.

Mourinho posted on Instagram after the match, stating that “bad performances deserve bad results”, before informing supporters that training will take place at 11AM on Friday morning. Keown responded, criticising Mourinho’s post.

“I don’t think my respect grows for the manager,” Keown said. “Some of those players would have felt wounded at half-time, the players who came on were hardly any better. Is this how we’re going to communicate?

“If you want to talk to me, talk to my face. After the draw against West Ham, we’re hearing he didn’t speak to the players for four or five days but spoke in the public. Keep it in house. It’s a bit childish. Keep it in the dressing room, I’m not sure that’s healthy.”

TBR’s view – Mourinho’s post shows feeling towards Tottenham fans

It is a way for the £288,000-a-week (Mail) manager to show Tottenham’s supporters just how bitter he feels at the defeat, it allows him to get in touch with the supporters – and show them that he is hurting just as much as them.

Forming that bond with Tottenham’s supporters is important, especially after Spurs fans lost such a well-liked manager in Mauricio Pochettino before appointing Mourinho. The post allows Mourinho to form a bond, rather than making things worse.
