Martin Jol says he told Daniel Levy to sell Tottenham player back in May

Martin Jol has told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT (Wednesday, 8:15am) that he told Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy to sell Christian Eriksen in the summer, if the player did not want to sign a new deal.

Eriksen, 27, was left on the bench as Bayern Munich smashed Tottenham with a 7-2 win in the Champions League. To make matters worse, former Arsenal star Serge Ganbry put spurs to the sword, scoring four goals for Niko Kovac’s side.

Former Ajax star Eriksen came off the bench and came close to scoring but for a wonderful save for Manuel Neuer. But the Danish playmaker has been in and out of the side, as his contract saga continues – with the deal expiring next summer.

Ex-Tottenham boss Jol was asked about the ongoings at Spurs, and he claimed that he told Levy to sell Eriksen if he did not want to stay when Spurs visited Ajax in the Champions League semi-final in May.

“Daniel Levy has to sort it out,” Jol said. “There must be a problem because they have unbelievable over the last couple of seasons. If Eriksen is on the bench, you have a problem. I know Christian, he made his debut with me at Ajax.

“He is probably their best player. Dele Alli only plays well when Eriksen is there. I think he wants to go. I told Levy to keep him at the Ajax game, but if he wants to go, you have to sell him. Hopefully Lo Celso can come good.

TBR’s view – What can Tottenham do now, regarding Eriksen?

Eriksen’s sights are set on leaving Tottenham, you can tell in his body language and in his performances for Spurs. The fact that Mauricio Pochettino is starting Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, who are in the same contractual position as Eriksen , shows that Eriksen’s head is not in the right place.

Levy has little options. Yes, he can still look to pull his wallet out and offer Eriksen a new deal. But the Dane may not even entertain a huge contract, with his head being turned. Levy has to make a decision in January.

Does he allow Pochettino to keep him until the summer and let him go for nothing? Or does he sell him for a cut-price figure in January? The likelihood is next summer.
