Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has responded when asked by Slovakian outlet Sport.sk if Rafa Benitez will return to the club to replace Steve Bruce, as a reported takeover edges closer to completion.

Dubravka, 31, has started every single one of Newcastle’s 29 Premier League games this season – and has now clocked up 80 Toon appearances since joining the club from MSK Zilina in January 2018, initially on loan.

With a takeover reportedly imminent and only checks by the Premier League left to be completed, Newcastle are expected to have plenty of money to spend in the summer – and could even bring in a new manager to replace Steve Bruce.

Asked about a potential return of Benitez, just a season after he left the club to join Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang, Dubravka did not rule out the Spaniard returning to Tyneside. Dubravka was signed by Benitez just over two years ago.

“If this happens and the club sells, it will probably come with a huge supply of financ,” Dubravka said. “When you think about the possession of a new possible owner, it is not surprising. I heard that Rafael Benitez could also come back.

“There is a lot of speculation, so let’s be surprised at the outcome…”

TBR’s view – Should Newcastle consider a move for Benitez?

It would be harsh on Bruce. The Geordie came to Newcastle last summer, halfway through pre-season, and has guided his boyhood club to Premier League safety. Surely he deserves a chance to remain as manager.

Yes, Benitez has deserved his iconic status among Toon supporters – and certainly boasts more charisma and tactical knowhow than Bruce. But the latter has had to deal with mammoth injury concerns, and of course Lee Charnley signing players for him.

Benitez would be a top addition, but Bruce deserves time.
