Martin Dubravka was critical of Steve Bruce’s decision to use a back four against Leicester City, Sky Sports reports. Newcastle United were beaten 5-0 to keep them in the relegation zone in the Premier League.

Bruce – who is already under pressure from Newcastle fans – decided to change things up against Leicester. With Jetro Willems and Matt Ritchie both out, Newcastle changed from wing-backs to regular full-backs.

Using an unfamiliar system, the Magpies struggled and this was reflected in the full-time result. Following the game, Dubravka pointed to this Bruce tactic as a contributing factor in their loss.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Dubravka said: “The coach decided to play four at the back and we needed to adapt. We were trying to do our best but I have to say it didn’t work. We are used to playing five at the back which fits us probably more the last couple of times we played there and were successful.

“But I understand that he is also trying to explain some kind of style that he wants to do it so we need to try to do it. If not we cannot change the results. We are trying to do what the gaffer is expecting of us. Unfortunately, it didn’t work this time.”

TBR’s view

Dubravka’s honest comments echo the thoughts of many fans. Bruce’s tactics were strange against Leicester and Newcastle need to somehow bounce back from this.

After such a heavy defeat, they go into the game against Manchester United with low confidence. The pressure continues to mount on Bruce and he needs a Tottenham-esque performance from somewhere.
