Jesse Marsch has told ESPN FC that he is incredibly proud of Tyler Adams and claimed that his performances since he joined Leeds United in the summer are the best he has seen from the 23-year-old.

Adams was one of several players to arrive at Elland Road this summer. Of course, his arrival seemed particularly significant in the wake of Kalvin Phillips’ departure.

The move made Leeds the third club where Adams has played under Marsch. He started his career with the New York Red Bulls before joining RB Leipzig in 2019.

The USMNT international did not have the best time in the Bundesliga last season. And with that, Marsch opened up on some of the difficult conversations the two had before his move to Leeds.

It appears that the Whites boss felt that Adams had lost his way. But those conversations helped convince Marsch to bring him to Leeds. And clearly, he is absolutely delighted with the impact Adams has made since arriving in Yorkshire.

“Obviously I love Tyler and I mean that. It’s different than a son, but it’s similar because I’ve known him for so long. I’m very proud of him. I’m very proud of the person that he is. And I’ve always believed in him, always. But I’ve also known that he’s had challenges, big challenges,” he told ESPN FC.

“Even when I brought him here, I said to him, ‘of course I know you have leadership qualities and I know who you are as a person, but we just need to get you back to being the kind of player that you are’.

“His performances since he’s been here have been the best that I’ve seen. And he’s exactly where I know he should be.”

Marsch incredibly proud of Tyler Adams

As Marsch suggests, Adams has started brightly at Leeds. He may not be a player who grabs headlines with his performances on the pitch, but he is going to be a key man over this season.

His partnership with Marc Roca is already showing glimpses of real potential. Adams has been superb at reading the game and breaking up play. He has won numerous tackles for the Whites, and he rarely gives away possession.

The biggest compliment you can perhaps pay Adams is that he arguably looks much better suited to Marsch’s system than Phillips had done towards the end of last season.

That may largely be down to experience of working with Marsch. Phillips’ campaign was also interrupted by injury.

But it is promising that Leeds now look to be stronger in the middle of the park. And Marsch is clearly confident that Adams could play a key role for some time.
