Mark Lawrenson has told BBC Sport that he is backing Liverpool to beat Leeds United on Monday, before expressing what he finds to be a particular shame for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Of course, the upcoming game will evoke memories for many of the opening weekend of the season. The pair met at Anfield and played out a seven-goal thriller with the champions edging the game.

Even in defeat, it was a result that put the Premier League on notice that Leeds were not planning to languish near the bottom of the table.

They have since ensured that they will be playing in the top flight once again next year.

For Liverpool meanwhile, the clash perhaps dropped an early hint of the struggles Jurgen Klopp’s men would endure this year.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the Reds. Nevertheless, Lawrenson suggested that he expects the visitors to complete the double over Leeds.

“We could be in for another cracker here, too,” he told BBC Sport, he predicted a 2-1 win for Liverpool. “Leeds come into the game fresh from beating Manchester City and, although Liverpool got knocked out of the Champions League in midweek, they looked sharp against Real Madrid.

“The Reds created some good early chances, and played well, certainly in the first half. Real kept them a little bit at arms length after the break.

“I can see Liverpool getting some opportunities on Monday too, but Leeds will too. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have had a brilliant season, and it’s such a shame so few people have got to go to any of their games.”

TBR View: Opponents yet to take in full Elland Road experience

It could be argued that opposition teams have not yet had the full experience when it comes to facing a Leeds side doing well in the Premier League.

And that is because of the absence of the fans.

Elland Road is set to be an incredible setting when the supporters can attend games again.

Whatever happens on Monday, the fans can be incredibly proud of what Leeds have achieved on their return to English football’s top table.
