Looking ahead to this weekend’s opening round of Premier League fixtures, Match of the Day pundit and former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has predicted a tough time for newly-promoted Sheffield United this season.
The Blades’ campaign gets underway on Saturday with a visit to the Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth. Lawrenson believes that the Yorkshire club will take a point from this match. The pundit also states that he is “a big fan of Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder…I just like the way his teams play, with everyone so comfortable on the ball”.
It’s certainly true that Wilder’s side played some scintillating football in the Championship last season. However, translating that to the top flight will be a tough task. That being said, plenty of new signings were welcomed to Bramall Lane this summer in an effort to give Wilder’s squad the upgrade it required ahead of the Premier League campaign.
Amongst those new arrivals was Oli McBurnie. The Blades parted with a club-record fee of £20 million to prise the Scottish striker away from Swansea. However, Lawrenson is not convinced that the 23-year-old has what it takes to fire his new team to top flight survival.
On the subject of the forward’s task, Lawrenson said, “I am a bit concerned by the Blades’ goal threat in the Premier League. New signing Oli McBurnie is only going to get better but is he going to get the goals to keep them up? There is a bit of pressure on him, and I don’t think he will”.
