Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has given his verdict on Thiago Alcantara ahead of his move to Anfield.
As reported by the likes of BBC Sport, the Reds have agreed a deal to sign the Bayern Munich midfielder for at least £20m, plus £5m in add-ons, on a four-year contract.
While Liverpool are yet to announce the deal, Hansi Flick told a press conference – as reported by The Mirror – that he “can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person.”
Though Liverpool won the Premier League by a huge margin in 2019-20, only Kostas Tsimikas has been added to their ranks during the current transfer window so far.
At the weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s charges were given a big scare by Leeds United, who pushed the hosts all the way in a 4-3 thriller.
“You wouldn’t call it a mediocre display by the Reds, because their forwards got four goals, but it was the first time for a while that they weren’t joined up from front to back,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport. “The defence was all over the place and yet the front three were excellent.
“It’s nothing to worry about as a one off, though, and in terms of joining things up Thiago Alcantara’s arrival from Bayern Munich will strengthen their midfield. He is an upgrade on Georginio Wijnaldum, put it that way.”
Harsh on Wijnaldum perhaps, but a player of Thiago’s calibre will boost any team, and given Liverpool have shown flaws since wrapping up the Premier League title, they could do with some new additions.
Given the highest plaudits by many of his peers, the versatile midfielder is just the type of arrival who could edge the Reds to the next level – crucial given how much their title rivals have strengthened in recent weeks.
