Mark Lawrenson criticises Everton duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Gylfi Sigurdsson

Mark Lawrenson has claimed that midfield duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Gylfi Sigurdsson are both a worry in the Everton midfield.

The pair started for the Toffees last weekend in the  FA Cup third round, but struggled in the 1-0 away defeat to Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were beaten by pretty much Liverpool’s second string and it was a serious chance wasted.

Everton used Schneiderlin and Sigurdsson in the centre of the park against Liverpool, but neither are enjoined the best individual campaigns.

Schneiderlin, 30, has had inconsistent minutes due to form and injuries, and his best days certainly look behind him.

Meanwhile, 30-year-old Sigurdsson is another player on the decline and the attacking midfielder has just two goals in 23 games across all competitions.

BBC pundit Lawrenson has picked out the Everton pair ahead of the weekend fixture at home to Brighton.

“I looked at them [against Liverpool] and across midfield Morgan Schneiderlin and Gylfi Sigurdsson looked pedestrian, which is a worry,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

TBR’s View:

A Schneiderlin-Sigurdsson midfield combination has got lightweight written all over it and is one that Ancelotti should look to avoid moving forward at Goodison Park.

Everton have to respond when they host Brighton in the league on Saturday and surely the Italian manager has to consider some changes.

Fabian Delph and Tom Davies were both named on the bench for the Merseyside derby defeat, but each would add some extra steel to the team and have to be considered for selection.
