Mario Gotze has confirmed to SportBild that he will leave Borussia Dortmund this summer for nothing – so should Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp form a reunion with the midfielder, given the duo remain in close contact?
Gotze, 27, has managed just 19 appearances for Dortmund this season under Lucien Favre, with the young generation taking over at the Westfalenstadion. The likes of Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and Thorgan Hazard are now preferred.
The 2014 World Cup final goalscorer’s contract ends in the summer and the former Bayern star has now confirmed to German newspaper Bild that he will leave Dortmund when that deal expires – and has changed his agent.
“After intensive considerations, I decided to make a change in the sporting planning of my career. I deliberately took the necessary time for this step because it is an important step for me to set the course for the future.”
“I am very much looking forward to working with Reza Fazeli and his agency International Soccer Management, whose professional competence has convinced me,” Gotze said.

Under Klopp, Gotze broke into the Dortmund team as a 17-year-old and played 116 times for Dortmund under the now-Liverpool manager – scoring 31 goals. He then joined Bayern Munich in 2013.
By the time Gotze returned to Dortmund in 2016, Klopp was Liverpool manager. But it is clear that Gotze’s best form came when he was playing under the guidance of Klopp – and the German playmaker has claimed he is still in regular contact.
“I’m still in touch with Jurgen,” Gotze told DAZN, as per TalkSPORT. “He taught me everything about professional football. He let me play. I often speak to Klopp. We never stop talking. He knows me very well. I am looking for new challenges.”
So, should Klopp sign Gotze given he is available on a free? Adam Lallana is due to leave this summer, while Gini Wijnaldum is set to enter the final 12 months of his deal – with Inter Milan linked with a move for the Dutch midfielder.
Naby Keita is also being linked with an exit, so bringing in cover in attacking midfield is crucial. Surely landing a player that is still only 27, a World Cup winner, available on a free and knows Klopp better than most is an absolute no-brainer.
