Mario Gomez to Fiorentina: “Super Mario” follows Miroslav Klose to Serie A

Bayern Munich have agreed for a fee of 20M Euros ( 25.7M $) from Fiorentina for the transfer of German striker, Mario Gomez.

Gomez will now follow veteran Miraslove Klose to Italy. Klose plays for Lazio, who finished 7th in the Italian League and also won the Coppa Italia in the “Rome” derby.

“It was the desire of Mario Gomez to leave Bayern Munich for Florence. We have now complied with his wish,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s official website.

“He has made a major contribution to two German championships and two DFB Pokal victories. The highlight was of course the Champions League victory and winning the treble last season. I would like to thank him for his Bayern performances. On behalf of the club, I wish him luck and success in Florence!”

Fiorentina finished fourth in Serie A last season. To improve their performance and to find a suitable replacement for Steven Jovetic, the Voila have signed Gomez from Munich. The Italian club were on red alert when Gomez declared his intent to move to another club in May this year. Ever since then, they have been tracking him.

Fiorentina’s Jovetic has been linked with Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan. Its clear that any one of these clubs could sign Jovetic who has a price tag of 28M Euros.

Fiorentina have already secured the services of AC Milan’s defensive midfielder Ambrossini. The Voila have also signed goalkeeper Gustavo Munua, defender Marcos Alonso and midfielders Juan Cuadardo and Joaquin.

Mario Gomez was the first choice striker for the Bavarians in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons. But he was side lined and made only a few first team appearances due to the signing of the Croat Mario Madzukic. He has so far scored 75 goals in 115 appearances for Bayern at a rate of 0.65 goals per game.

Gomez is known for striking using both the feet. He has the ability to anticipate passes and crosses. He, Ribery and Robben formed a lethal combination for Bayern. Gomez is still remembered for his four goals against FC Basel in UCL2011-2012 Knock-out stage in which Bayern won 7-0. In the DFB Pokal 2012-2013 semifinal against Wolfburg, Gomez came on as a sub and scored a hat trick within the space of 6 minutes.

He is a superb player. Or else Bayern wouldn’t have signed him from Sttugart for a record fee around 35M Euros. Now he has a fresh opportunity in the form of Fiorentina. He will surely get the status of first team striker. All he has to do is continue is mesmerizing form to impress the people of Florence and the other Italians. Let’s wish Mario Gomez good luck !
