Former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder, Mario Basler, has offered his opinion on the David Alaba situation and suggested he could well up in Liverpool afterall.

Alaba’s contractual situation is one of the more dominant news stories in world football at the moment. Bayern are said to be planning for life without the Austrian star, who sees his current deal expire this coming summer.

Liverpool have been tipped as a potential destination for the experienced Alaba, who is still just 28 despite that experience which has seen him win over 70 caps for his country.

And Basler, who won Euro 96 with Germany here in England, told Sport 1 Fanatik believes Alaba will indeed leave Bayern.

“The story with Alaba should really end with him leaving. Maybe he’ll go to Liverpool. They have big problems with the injury to Van Dijk and the cruciate ligament rupture.

“He’s supposed to be out for a long time, and I think there’s a big need (to strengthen) in the central defender position.”

Liverpool are expected to make a move in January for a new defender given Van Dijk’s injury. Alaba, who can play a wide range of positions, could well prove an option if he is available cheaper due to his contract situation.

Not many who are this good are going to be available at a cut-price deal or for nothing in seven or eight months’ time.

Alaba would be a capable deputy to fill in for Van Dijk but would then offer Liverpool a brilliant option once the Dutchman is back in action.
