Newcastle United fans know not to expect much from the January transfer window, though reports from the Mirror claim that the Magpies may consider a move for Mario Balotelli as he looks to leave Nice.
Balotelli appears certain to depart the Ligue 1 club but his destination remains unclear, with Newcastle now seemingly leading the race for him in terms of Premier League clubs.
However, it seems a strange decision, given the disciplinary nature of manager Rafa Benitez, to sign a player who is as unpredictable as Balotelli and who has previously failed to produce the goods at Liverpool.

Fans may point to the Italian’s better form for Manchester City, but they too would know that Balotelli would seemingly be just a short-term fix. In any case, moving for him would be a gamble.
Currently only two points above the drop zone and with only 15 goals scored, only Huddersfield have scored fewer and it is clear that bringing in a goalscorer must be a priority with the limited funds available.
Balotelli, who has not scored in any of his 10 appearances this season, would be a real wildcard for Newcastle. Benitez is not the kind of coach to take such gambles.
