Real Madrid ace Mariano has snubbed the chance to move to Arsenal this summer, according to Spanish outlet AS, via the Daily Mirror.
They report that the player who joined Real for £30 million has been offered to the Gunners for £18 million this summer, but doesn’t fancy the move to the Emirates Stadium.
Eden Hazard’s arrival has pushed Mariano down the pecking order at the Bernabeu but despite that, he isn’t keen on joining Unai Emery’s men.
He would apparently prefer to stay and fight for his place in Zinedine Zidane’s plans as the Frenchman sets about bringing silverware back to the club.
The lack of Champions League football on offer at Arsenal may put a lot of players off and Mariano may well have been put off by that.
Arsenal don’t want players who aren’t busting a gut to wear the shirt anyway, and that’s where Wilfried Zaha may well fit the bill in a better way.
It is another setback for the Gunners in a transfer window that is so important as Unai Emery seeks to take the club back into Europe’s elite competition on a slim budget.
The issue with taking cast-offs from the bigger Spanish clubs is perhaps that the hearts of the players aren’t in it.
