Former Tottenham winger Marcus Edwards is gearing up to play in north London once more tonight with Vitoria, the Portuguese club he joined last summer.
And Edwards told the Times that some of the things Mauricio Pochettino said about him – comparing him to Lionel Messi before chastising his attitude – damaged his reputation and created mud which stuck.
He said: “The negative stuff, that was a bit harsh. I get judged and that is not fair. That was the bit that was harsh and set off rumours as I did not show any authority issues. When Poch said it I was a bit confused as I did not show that. I had changed. When I went to Norwich it stuck. They kill you from there.
“It is a bit surprising, some of the things said. Some things have tarnished me. If you say something like that in the media, it gets blown up. It was a bit harsh, unfair. It used to stop opportunities for me. Clubs saying that they were not sure and don’t want to take the risk.”

TBR’s View – Tottenham and Edwards reached the point of no return
When there is so much hype but also criticism of a player before they have even become a first team regular, it’s generally a sign that it’s for the best that they go their separate ways.
Edwards will benefit from playing out of the spotlight of English football but has the opportunity to stun Tottenham’s biggest rivals tonight.
That might get him back on the radar, but a bit of time getting on with his football quietly might not be the worst idea. It’s clear Edwards feels he’s been misunderstood and he clearly has talent.
