Everton’s under-23 team moved four points clear at the summit of the Premier League 2 table with a 2-0 home win against Blackburn Rovers on Monday.

Playing at Southport, goals from Bassala Sambou and Fraser Hornby ensured Everton stretched their lead at the top of the youth league.

And it is about time that Marco Silva started rewarding some of these hardworking and talented youngsters with first-team call-ups.

Everton are out of the FA Cup and currently sit ninth in the Premier League. Six points adrift of seventh-place Wolves, even the Europa League looks a distant dream this season.

As a result, there is little to play for but pride and preparation for next season.

This is the perfect time to blood in some young players and it is about time Sambou and Hornby were given a chance in the senior squad.

Sambou joined from Coventry City as a youngster and has scored eight goals in 19 games for the under-23 team this season.

Everton chose not to send the German-born 21-year-old out on loan in January so they will not know whether he is ready for first-team football unless he is tested.

Hornby was also denied the chance to head out on loan in January due to injury but he has been impressive this season.

The 19-year-old, who represents Scotland at under-21 level, plays just behind Sambou and could make his first-team breakthrough in the near future.

Silva must consider using Sambou and Hornby before the season ends.
