Everton manager Marco Silva is hopeful that Dominic Calvert-Lewin can build some momentum after his match-winning display on Tuesday night.
The 22-year-old inspired the Toffees to a 2-0 away victory against Championship opposition Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup third round.
Calvert-Lewin scored a brace inside the opening 10 minutes to seal progress for his side to the next round of the competition.
The English centre-forward netted a volley to open the scoring, before adding a second quickly after with a close-range finish.
He’s shared the sole striker role this campaign at Goodison Park with summer addition Moise Kean, but neither have managed to fully cement the position yet.
Silva spoke about Calvert-Lewin after his latest display and wants him to kick on now.
“It was important for Dominic to score twice. He did well to score in important moments. It gives him confidence. Let’s hope he continues in that way,” Silva said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
Calvert-Lewin should take huge positives from his cup heroics and there is definitely an opportunity to break into the main XI if he performs.
But he’s never been a prolific striker during his time at Goodison Park and has just one goal in his five league appearances so far this campaign.
He offers a more physical presence in attack than teammate Kean and can play an important role this season, but has to up his goal output if he can.
Everton host Manchester City at the weekend in the Premier League and that would be an ideal place to start.
