Marco Silva claims there is more to come from Everton defender Mason Holgate

Marco Silva has detailed an individual discussion he had with Everton defender Mason Holgate, where he gave him some personal advice on how to improve and make an impact at Goodison Park.

The 23-year-old impressed last season on loan at West Brom in the Championship, but is now back with the Toffees and making a positive impact.

He is a versatile defender that can play at right-back, but is a centre-back by trade and has slotted into the middle role in recent games.

The Englishman scored his first senior Everton goal in the Carabao Cup last-16 victory over Watford and has played in every minute of the cup competition so far.

He also started his first Premier League game of the season last time out in the loss to Brighton and is forcing his way into more game time.

Porgueuse boss Silva has spoken highly of Holgate and is confident that he’s someone that will keep getting better.

“Mason understood our defensive idea really well from the first day I came. He is a clever player,” Silva said, as quoted by the club’s official website.

“[I told him] to be more focussed in every single moment of the training sessions, from the first minute to the last. And the other thing was to be a defender in some moments in the training sessions.

“Mason on the ball is a very good player, he knows how I like central defenders with the quality to play. But… he is a defender and a defender has to command.

“There are many, many things to improve in his game. There is more to come from him because he has the quality.”

TBR’s View:

Holgate is certainly an Everton player with a lot of potential, but aged 23 now he’s starting to move away from being a youngster anymore and has played 54 senior games for the club.

He’s not apart of the best XI yet when everyone is available to Silva, but is definitely seizing his chance in the spotlight right now and he just has to keep going.

The defender has shown some real quality moments since he moved to Goodison Park in 2015 and there is definitely a future for him in the Everton backline if he just sharpens up his game.
