Mexican playmaker Marcelo Flores has posted on Instagram after it was confirmed that he had penned professional terms at Arsenal for the first time, after impressing with the Under-18 side over the past few months.
Flores, 17, has broken into the Under-18 starting eleven this season, playing in all four Premier League Under-18 fixtures. He has scored three goals for the Gunners, netting a brace against Crystal Palace towards the end of September.
The attacking midfielder – who can play in the 10 role or out wide – is impressing Arsenal coaches with his technical ability and close control. He is certainly showing that he is more than capable of becoming a regular in the Under-18 side.
Should he continue such form, there is no reason why he could not break into the Under-23 side before the end of the 2020-21 campaign. Flores posted on Instagram after it was confirmed he signed professional terms, posing alongside Per Mertesacker.
TBR’s view – Flores will be buoyed by Mikel Arteta’s faith in youth
Since the Spaniard arrived at Arsenal in place of Unai Emery, Arteta has shown a faith in youth. Joe Willock, Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli are all examples of Arteta promoting youth – and sticking with them.
Flores is some way away from senior football but over the course of the next season, the Mexican – who has been called up by the Mexico Under-18 side – needs to gain a place in the Under-23 side and then the season after, push for a debut.
