Marcelo Bielsa says Leeds player is yet to produce a 7/10 performance since joining the club

Marcelo Bielsa has told his pre-Watford press conference – as per Leeds Live – that Junior Firpo is yet to produce a 7/10 display for Leeds since joining.

Firpo, 25, has now started seven of the club’s eight league and cup fixtures this term. Joining the club from Barcelona, there was plenty of hype.

Since then, that has diminished somewhat. Firpo is still adapting but his performances are yet to live up to what Leeds fans had hoped from him.

On Saturday, it was his own goal – though completely inadvertently – that saw West Ham equalise. Luck is not going his way either.

Asked about Firpo’s first few weeks at the club, Bielsa stated that Firpo is yet to produce a 7/10 display – but he is consistently above six.

“With regards to his evolution in the team, he hasn’t produced a 7/10 performance, but also, he hasn’t played below 6/10,” Bielsa said.

“He has had a regular performance and he’s grown, but below what he’s capable of doing. He has come from playing for two other teams.

“With some rhythm, he will shine a lot because he has all the physical and technical resources to generate moments of very good football.”

Bielsa on Firpo: Leeds fans must give summer signing time

While the expectancy of Leeds fans is growing, after a season back in the Premier League, it is important that they give the likes of Firpo time.

In the Championship, some players melted under the demands of Bielsa. Jean-Kevin Augusting had starred in French and Germany’s top tiers.

But moving to Leeds, he managed three substitute appearances before departing. Big players can fold under Bielsa’s intense demands.

It means players need time to adapt, to learn his way, to develop the required fitness. For Firpo to be above a six already, deserves praise.

Combining his skill, his pace, his technique, his mentality – with Bielsa’s tactics and fitness, Leeds will eventually have a proper left-back.
