Marcelo Bielsa has told his pre-Crystal Palace press conference – as per Leeds Live – that Joe Gelhardt could have a chance of being included in the Leeds United’s squad for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Leeds come into the match having clocked up 10 points from their opening seven games – but suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Leicester City last time out. Youri Tielemans netted a brace, while Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes also scored.

The Whites were without Rodrigo, and he will be missing on Saturday too. Raphinha may also struggle to be involved, with Bielsa confirming the club will make a decision on his inclusion come Friday before the game at Selhurst Park.

That may leave a spot on the bench for another attacker, and it may force Bielsa to look to the Under-23 side. Summer signing Gelhardt, who cost £1million (Sun) from cash-strapped Wigan, scored a brace last time out for the reserve team.

He already has three Premier League 2 goals in six games for Leeds, combining well with fellow new addition Sam Greenwood before the latter got an injury. Not only is he effective in front of goal, but he has proved creative – dropping in on occasion.

His form has not gone unnoticed by supporters and the media and Bielsa was asked if Gelhardt – nicknamed Joffy – could break into the first team for Saturday’s match. Bielsa left the door open for a possible inclusion.

“Yes, he is a player that is progressing. The evolution of the whole U23s team, we follow it closely,” Bielsa said. We analyse every performance of the U23s as if it were the first team and because normally we train with 22 players.

“When we are missing any of those we sub them with the U23s. I think that around 50% of the U23s players can apply for a place on our team,” Bielsa continued, on the possibility of Gelhardt being included.
