Marcelo Bielsa reacts to Tyler Roberts display in Leeds win
Marcelo Bielsa has claimed that Tyler Roberts took a step forward following his performance as Leeds United beat Watford on Saturday – in comments reported by Leeds Live.
What’s the story?
Roberts continues to prove to be a divisive figure amongst Leeds supporters.
The Wales international has produced some brilliant displays for the Whites. However, he has struggled to consistently provide the quality that Leeds need from their number 10.
And with Joe Gelhardt knocking on the door, all of Leeds’ attacking players seem to have been put on notice that they need to step up.
Both Roberts and Gelhardt were on the bench on Saturday. But it would have come as a surprise to few when it was the former who was introduced as Stuart Dallas came off with 12 minutes remaining.
At the time, Leeds were defending a 1-0 lead by going in search of a second goal.
And ultimately, it was Roberts who came closer than anyone to finding the back of the net.
The 22-year-old struck the bar with an outrageous effort during the latter stages after already having an attempt cleared off the line.
It was a cameo that will give Roberts a lot of confidence heading into the international break. And for Bielsa, it was a display that showed why he has never lost faith with him.
“He still hasn’t been able to link his qualities with his performances,” he said, as reported by Leeds Live. “I in particular have a lot of confidence in his resources.
“I feel that he is a player who can unbalance and I hope he can evolve and take a leading role in our team. Today he took a step forward.”
Leeds fans’ frustration with Roberts stems from knowing how good he can be
Roberts was one of the players who impressed towards the end of last season. His best display arguably came against Chelsea – when, once again, he struck the woodwork.
The problem for Roberts is many Leeds fans can easily recall all of the games in which he has really stood out.
But with Patrick Bamford sidelined, it would be huge for Leeds if Roberts can kick on from here.
Bielsa clearly believes he can.
