Marcelo Bielsa reacts to Eddie Nketiah's display in Leeds draw

Marcelo Bielsa has suggested, in comments reported by Leeds Live, that he saw a lot of good things from Eddie Nketiah during Leeds United’s draw with Sheffield Wednesday that he had not previously seen.

Nketiah came on at half-time at Hillsborough as Leeds looked for an opening goal. Patrick Bamford had grown into the first-half, and had only been denied by an incredible stop from Keiren Westwood.

The Arsenal loanee may not have scored, but he certainly made an impact. He battled well against Wednesday’s centre-backs and created arguably Leeds’s best chance of the half.

He produced a fantastic change of pace to get round the defender and cut the ball back for Jack Harrison. However, the winger saw his effort blocked on the line.

It looks as though Nketiah has staked a further claim to end his wait for a start. And Bielsa suggested after the game that the youngster produced the kind of performance that he needed to see.

“Patrick is a player who has the skill to fight in the physical challenge. Until today we thought Eddie had less skill in this sense, but today he showed the opposite,” he said, as reported by Leeds Live.

“I saw a lot of good things in Eddie today and I didn’t see that in before performances. I give value to the spirit to compete, to recover the ball, to help the team to pass through difficult moments and one great skill to unbalance the one v one offensively. Powerful movement when he had to dribble at the centre-back he faced,” he went on to add.

There is surely no doubt that Nketiah is banging on the door. Three goals in 10 substitute appearances is impressive. And he looked like a player on a mission against the Owls.

Bielsa has rarely dropped a player for any reason other than injury. So perhaps some would be surprised if a change is made. But it does appear that Nketiah should be closer than ever to getting that chance to show what he can do from the off.
