Marcelo Bielsa has lauded Patrick Bamford following Leeds United’s win over Southampton, insisting – in comments reported by Leeds Live – that the striker has shone this season.

With one game to go, Bamford needs one goal to surpass his return from last year in the Championship. He took his tally to 16 on Tuesday as he squeezed the ball past Alex McCarthy from close range.

It was a strike that set Leeds on their way to a 2-0 win at St Mary’s. And following the game, Bielsa was asked if Bamford would be unlucky to miss out on the England squad this summer after the campaign he has enjoyed.

“Patrick had a very generous performance with a lot of effort,” he said, as reported by Leeds Live. “He has had a season in which he has shone. I’m sure he will be very positive about the campaign that he has had, be what may.”

Bamford has certainly given himself an amazing chance of making Gareth Southgate’s squad. Harry Kane is the only English player to have scored more in the top flight this season.

He is obviously an outside contender to make the team. It seemed telling that Southgate decided to leave him out of his most recent squad.

Having said that, Southgate has three additional spots to fill. That should certainly improve Bamford’s hopes.

And if he can end the campaign on a high this weekend, it is going to become even tougher for Southgate to find a way to try and justify leaving him out.
