Marcelo Bielsa lauds form of Leeds captain Liam Cooper since promotion
Marcelo Bielsa has suggested – in comments reported by Leeds Live – that Liam Cooper has had no problem adapting to life in the Premier League as he praised the Leeds United captain’s consistency at the highest level.
Cooper is one of a number of Leeds players who went into this season with a point to prove. Before Bielsa’s arrival, he had struggled to silence his critics.
And even with Leeds on course to seal promotion, some had their doubts about whether Cooper would be able to make the grade if they reached the highest level.
However, the Scotland international has not looked out of place. The 29-year-old has started 18 times in the Premier League. And when asked about Cooper’s form this season, Bielsa claimed that he has done extremely well.
“From my point of view, with no inconvenience,” he said, as reported by Leeds Live, when asked about how Cooper has adapted in the top flight.
“He’s a player that defends very well. He goes to face very well, he protects well his back. He shines with his aerial game and he’s good with the ball. All of this, he expresses with regularity in most of the games.”
Bielsa has suggested that Cooper has been consistent. However, he appears to have taken his game to another level in recent weeks.
His performances against the likes of Leicester, Crystal Palace and Wolves were outstanding. And his form is all the more remarkable given the large majority of his recent appearances have come alongside Pascal Struijk.
Struijk has been a revelation. However, Cooper’s performances have surely had an impact on the youngster. They have given him the platform to focus on his own game.
As previously mentioned, there was a time when Leeds fans would have expected Cooper to struggle for game-time once Bielsa could pick Diego Llorente and Robin Koch.
But it currently appears that Llorente and Koch have a battle on their hands if they hope to push ahead of the current pairing in the pecking order.
