Marcelo Bielsa has told his post-match press conference after a 2-1 away win over Newcastle United – as per Leeds Live – that he is concerned for Diego Llorente’s mindset as the Spaniard suffered another injury on Tuesday night.
Llorente, 27, has endured a horrendous season so far – suffering numerous injuries that have limited Llorente to just two first-team outings. Upon signing, he picked up a groin problem while on Spain duty – keeping him out until December.
He came on for Robin Koch against Chelsea, but suffered an injury in that match – only to finally return against Newcastle on Tuesday. But the £22,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender was forced off early on, clutching his hamstring.
Bielsa commented on his defender after the match, explaining why he was worried about Llorente and his mindset after another injury. It remains to be seen if the hamstring problem will be a short-term injury, or one that keeps him out for a while.
“A similar problem to the one he had before,” Bielsa said. “It’s a problem for him, for all of us. In this moment, what worries me is Diego’s state of mind, given the succession of injuries he has had. It’s natural that he’s sad. We share that sadness.”
TBR’s view – When fit, Llorente can take Leeds to the next level
That is why it is such a shame the Spain international is sidelined once again. A towering presence at the back, he is equally as good in the air as he is with the ball at his feet – making the third injury suffered by Llorente this season even harder to take.
Llorente has been rushed into the side – having to replace Koch against Chelsea and then on Tuesday night. He needs to be given minutes in the 23’s, building up to his optimum fitness. When he finally gets to that level of fitness, he can take Leeds forward.
