Marcelo Bielsa has told his pre-Swansea City press conference – as quoted by Leeds Live – as saying that Liam Cooper deserves his call-up to Scotland’s national side, but that it is “always a risk” when players play for the country.
Cooper, 28, starred for Leeds last season and clocked up 38 Championship appearances – as well as scoring three goals. The Leeds skipper was named in the Championship Team of the 2018-19 Season.
This time around, Cooper has played four of Leeds’ first five league games- missing the 3-0 win over Stoke due to injury. He has helped Leeds win three and draw one of those matches, with the Whites keeping two clean sheets in those matches.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash between first and second place against Swansea, Bielsa stated that he is happy for Cooper to have been called up by Scotland – the first time since March 2017 – but admits there is a risk in terms of injury.

“This is something which recognises his performance. He deserves it. I congratulate him for this. For me, he deserves it. Opinions on national teams are always a risk because these decisions are made by team-mates or colleagues. This is why I can appreciate this selection of players,” Bielsa said.
TBR’s view – Leeds need Cooper to remain fit
Scotland take on both Russia and Belgium in the space of three days at the start of September, with both Euro 2020 qualifiers taking place at Hampden Park. The benefit is that Cooper will not have to travel far to take part.
However, Scotland have just Charlie Mulgrew, Grant Hanley and 27-year-old Cooper to choose from. The chances of Steve Clarke picking Cooper to play is high, and that means he may not only pick up his first cap – but he is also at risk of injury.
All Leeds can do is hope he does not pick up an injury.
