Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed, in comments reported by Leeds Live, that Jamie Shackleton has sustained a new injury and Leeds United will be without the midfielder for a few weeks.
Shackleton has endured a frustrating campaign with injury. The 19-year-old featured fairly regularly during the opening weeks of the campaign. And he impressed as he replaced Adam Forshaw in mid-September.
Unfortunately the teenager has only made one appearance since the 1-0 win over West Brom in October. That came in the recent victory at Reading. And it appeared that he was going to be ready in time to feature prominently over Christmas.
However, Bielsa has confirmed ahead of Saturday’s clash with Huddersfield that the midfielder is set to miss another significant period.
“The injury of him and Shackleton is an injury of about two or three weeks recovery and they are in this process of recovery,” he said, as reported by Leeds Live, when asked about Tyler Roberts’s injury.
“Yes, he had a muscular injury and we wish he recovers fast,” he then said as he was asked whether Shackleton had suffered a new injury.
It is a big blow for Shackleton. Forshaw is still struggling. So he would have been forgiven for feeling that he may have a fantastic chance to secure a regular spot in Leeds’s midfield.
He has shown that he has the ability to pick up where he left off after long spells out of the team. What was particularly impressive about his form last year was how he could come in and impress no matter how long it had been since he last featured, and no matter what position he was asked to play in.
Nevertheless, this setback will be hugely frustrating. He will want to prove that his fitness can be as reliable as he often is on the pitch.
