Had Leeds United supporters been told during pre-season that Mateusz Bogusz would still be awaiting his league debut for the Whites with three games of the season remaining, it is likely that many would have been quite surprised.
Bogusz appeared to enjoy a promising summer, particularly when Leeds visited Australia. But to date, his only first-team appearance came in the Carabao Cup back in August. And he went into Sunday’s clash with Swansea City having not been named in the matchday squad since the season’s resumption.
But that changed at the Liberty Stadium as Marcelo Bielsa handed Bogusz a chance on the bench.
And while the 18-year-old did not feature, it does appear that he has caught the eye of the Leeds boss, with Bielsa explaining, in comments reported by Leeds Live, what Bogusz has shown to be brought back into the fold.
“He is growing in training,” he said, as reported by Leeds Live. “It’s an offensive playmaker. I thought he would be an option today. More offensive than Shackleton and Gotts. For this reason, I considered him.”
TBR View: Bogusz can target league debut this season
Leeds have got three games coming up that could have massive implications for the club’s future. They are four points away from sealing promotion to the top flight.
That may leave most fans writing off Bogusz’s chances of making a league debut this season. But it does appear that no player makes Bielsa’s squad unless they have his trust.
Therefore, it would appear that Bogusz is now an option that Bielsa would be more than willing to turn to if he is needed. And thus, there may still be an opportunity for Bogusz this term.
It is certainly an encouraging sign that Bogusz is back in the squad at such a pivotal time for his club.
