Marcelo Bielsa has raved about Under-23 duo Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt in his pre-Newcastle United press conference – as per Leeds Live – when asked about the two Leeds United youngsters, praising the duo’s versatility.
Leeds have picked up just won win in their last six Premier League matches – and four points from a possible 18. But that is a stark contrast to the club’s Under-23 side, who sit top of Premier League 2’s second division, in their first season at that level.
Gelhardt, a summer addition from Wigan and Greenwood, who joined the club from Arsenal – costing a combined £4million – have certainly caught the eye in the reserves. Between them, they have 10 goals in 16 Premier League 2 appearances.
Gelhardt has four in eight while Greenwood has six in his eight outings – including a penalty on Sunday as Leeds beat Aston Villa 3-2. Asked about the duo’s form, Bielsa responded with high praise, amid calls for a place in the senior side.
“The position is as a centre forward,” Bielsa said, when asked about summer addition Greenwood – as per Leeds Live on Monday afternoon. “Normally he plays in conjunction with Gelhardt in the team.
“Gelhardt is a player that when he is close to the box is very dangerous and greenwood is the player who has a lot of capacity to arrive into the free spaces. They can play either with Gelhardt in front with Greenwood behind or the other way round.”
TBR’s view – Should Bielsa consider either player?
Patrick Bamford continues to be first choice up front and with eight goals in 12 Premier League matches, he has certainly earnt his place as the Whites’ attacking spearhead. Certainly, the critics have dried up this season.
But with Rodrigo playing in attacking midfield, Tyler Roberts seems to be the club’s only spare option and it is fair to say the Wales international is not an out-and-out striker, more of a number 10. Greenwood or Gelhardt could fill that void.
