Speaking in his pre-Burnley press conference, Marcelo Bielsa has admitted that Leeds United expected more from club-record signing Rodrigo.
Joining Leeds for a club-record £27million in the summer of 2020, big things were expected from the ex-Valencia star. He was Spain’s starting striker.
But things have not gone as well as he would have liked. Failing to displace Patrick Bamford, he struggled with injury and even a positive test.
Those issues set him back, limiting him to just 28 appearances in all competitions for Leeds. He scored seven goals, creating two more.

But much more was expected. It is not just the opinion of fans, but Bielsa too. The Argentine gaffer says the club did expect more from Rodrigo.
“He has all the faculties to triumph at Leeds. A very serious pro, very dedicated. He has had an influence on the team less than what we expected.
“But with Rodrigo, he doesn’t have an aspect to correct. High physical resources. Technical resources above average and continuity.
“Exempt him from any responsibility because in every game and session and private life he’s impeccable. He leaves it all and fights especially.”
Can Rodrigo finally produce best form for Leeds, amid Bielsa claim
The Brazil-born Spain international signed a four-year deal when he joined the club from Valencia. His first season has not gone to plan.
But Rodrigo will be hoping that after settling in, his injury issues are behind him and that he can gain some momentum in a Leeds shirt.
Glimpses need to become consistency. Starting on Sunday, when Leeds travel to Burnley. Last season, Rodrigo’s best moment came at Turf Moor.
He scored a gorgeous brace during a 4-0 win away from home. Do the same on Sunday, and it could just kickstart Rodrigo’s Leeds spell.
