Everton are reportedly keen on the signature of Ajax’s flying winger David Neres. Yahoo Sports are reporting that Everton are one of several teams keen on the player and have opened talks regarding a potential swoop. Ajax reportedly want €50 million (£43.5 million) for the player.
The news will certainly excite Everton fans, given Neres’ good form in the UEFA Champions League this season.
However, judging by comments made by Marcel Brands earlier this season, a move to Neres seems to be unlikely.
The Everton director of football spoke of his transfer plans to Voetbal International back in December. Speaking of two star players at his former club PSV Eindhoven, Hirving Lozano and Steven Bergwijn, he suggested he would not pay big money for Eredivisie stars.
“If Hirving Lozano and Steven Bergwijn go directly to the absolute top in the Premier League, they will find it very difficult.
“Thirty million for Hirving… we will not pay that. I do not know yet about Lozano and Bergwijn. If Lozano would cost twenty million, I would consider it, but at higher amounts we look at players who have already proven it in the Premier League or in another big league.”
Neres would, seemingly, fall into the same category.
Despite Ajax’s run in the Champions League, he has still not played regularly at a higher level. Lozano, for example, has thrived in the Champions League against the likes of Spurs, Inter, and Barcelona as well as in the World Cup. He, however, still falls short of the Brands ideals.
So spending £43.5 million on Neres seems like a far-fetched notion for Everton and the man in charge of their spending.
