Marcel Brands at Anfield, so was he scouting Marcelo Brozovic?

Marcel Brands has certainly not wasted any time getting used to life in Liverpool. Everton’s new director of football has been seen walking around the city taking in the sights. One of those, it appears, was the home of fierce rivals Liverpool. Brands was in attendance today at Anfield. Brazil took on Croatia in an international friendly, which Brands watched from the stands.

Immediately the focus turned to just why the Dutchman might have been there. Of course, it could perfectly harmless. He may have just been taking in a good game of football. But others suggest he might have been on a scouting mission.

But who for?

Excitement over Neymar, Luka Modric or Philippe Coutinho arriving at Goodison Park would obviously be over the top.

But there is one man among the Croatia squad who has been linked with a move to Everton. Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic appears to be something of a long-term Everton target.

In January, numerous reports in Italy suggested that Brozovic could be Goodison bound. As summed up by Football Italia the Toffees were one of several teams willing to buy the player, with his time at Inter coming to an end. The Nerazzurri were apparently looking for a fee in the region of €28 million (£24.5 million) for the player. Ber of the Inter squad, Brozovic thrived after the transfer links. He was one of the best performers as the club made their way into the Champions League places.

Undoubtedly he would be a fantastic recruit for Everton. A ball-playing creative central midfielder is something Everton need. After looking like a dispensable member of the Inter squad, Brozovic thrived after the transfer links. He was one of the best performers as the club made their way into the Champions League places.

Everton fans would certainly love to see him arrive at the club this summer. If Brands was at the Brazil game to see Brozovic, he’s likely to be disappointed. The 25-year-old played less than 30 minutes as a second-half substitute.

Brands was probably just taking in a good game of football. However, if he is planning a move to Brozovic, he would be on to a winner.
